What can lip filler achieve?

Lip filler is one of the most versatile aesthetic treatments available. It can do something very subtle, a touch of definition along the border, a small lift to the Cupid's bow - or it can add genuine volume for those who want a fuller pout. The key is that neither outcome should look like you have had something done. It should just look like a very good version of your lips.

Using hyaluronic acid - a substance your body produces naturally - lip filler integrates smoothly and can be gradually adjusted over time. It is also fully reversible, which means there is a meaningful safety net if the result is ever not quite right

Add volume

Fuller lips, particularly in the body of the lip — either subtly or more noticeably depending on your preference

Correct asymmetry

Most lips are naturally slightly uneven. Filler can bring better balance between the two sides.

Lift a flat top lip

Some techniques can create a subtle lift in a naturally flat upper lip, without adding obvious volume.

Define the border

Sharpen the lip line and Cupid's bow without adding significant volume — ideal for a natural, defined look.

Smooth lip lines

Reduce fine vertical lines around the mouth that can become more prominent with age.

Restore lost volume

Lips naturally thin with age. Filler can restore what has been lost rather than adding something new.

Why natural results start with the right practitioner

The fear that most people have about lip filler is understandable - you have seen the results that look overdone, the puffed out lips that bear no resemblance to the person's natural face. That outcome is almost always the result of too much product, a technique that prioritises volume over shape, or simply not enough anatomical knowledge.

Emma's approach is different. Every lip is assessed as an individual structure. The proportions of the upper and lower lip, the position of the Cupid's bow, the relationship between the lips and the rest of the face, all of it is considered before anything is decided. The starting point is always conservative. You can always add a little more in the future if you want it. You cannot so easily take it away.

As a Registered Nurse and Independent Prescriber with over 20 years of NHS clinical experience, Emma brings a level of anatomical knowledge and clinical judgement that goes beyond what most non-medical injectors can offer. She also always has hyaluronidase accessible to dissolve filler in the rare event that it is needed - both for cosmetic revision and for managing vascular complications safely.

Lip filler techniques at Aesthetics by Emma

There is no single technique that is right for everyone. The approach Emma uses depends on your lip anatomy, your existing shape, and the result you are looking for

Classic lip filler

Product is placed into the body and border of the lip to add volume and definition. The most versatile technique - suitable for most lip shapes and ideal for those wanting a natural enhancement.

Border definition

Filler placed precisely along the lip border for cleaner definition without adding significant volume. A popular choice for those who want a subtle result or who have naturally thin borders.

Russian lips

A technique that lifts and defines the lip rather than projecting it forward, creating a heart-shaped, Cupid's bow-led appearance. Better suited to certain lip shapes and discussed thoroughly at consultation.

Volume restoration

Focused on restoring lip volume that has been lost with age, rather than creating something new. A conservative approach that tends to produce the most natural-looking results for older patients.

Your lip filler appointment - what to expect

From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, the whole appointment is designed to feel calm and unhurried. There is no pressure to decide anything on the day, and Emma will always tell you if she thinks a treatment is not right for you.

Consultation

Emma listens to what you are hoping to achieve, assesses your lip anatomy, and gives you an honest assessment of what is realistic. She will explain exactly what she is planning to do and why. You can ask anything. If you decide you are not ready or would like to think about it, that is perfectly fine.

Numbing cream applied

A topical numbing cream is applied to the lips and left for around 15–20 minutes. This significantly reduces any discomfort during the treatment itself.

Treatment (15–30 minutes)

Emma carefully places the hyaluronic acid product using fine needles or a cannula depending on the technique. Most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure rather than pain. The whole procedure takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

Immediate review

Emma checks the result before you leave and answers any questions about what to expect over the next 24–48 hours. You will be given full aftercare guidance.

2 week review

A follow-up appointment at two weeks allows Emma to see the settled result and discuss whether any small adjustments are needed. This is included as standard.

6–9 months

Knowing what to expect after lip filler - and what to avoid - makes a real difference to your final result. Swelling is normal and part of the process. It does not reflect how the final result will look

Swelling peaks. Lips may appear significantly larger than intended. This is normal. Bruising may also appear. Avoid judging the result at this stage.

Swelling begins to reduce noticeably. Bruising, if present, starts to fade. The shape starts to become more apparent.

Most of the swelling has settled. The lips start to feel softer and more natural. Bruising has usually cleared entirely by day 10

Final result. The filler has fully integrated and the lip shape is settled. This is when Emma conducts the two-week review appointment.

Results typically last 6–9 months. Gradual metabolism varies between individuals. Emma can discuss maintenance timing at your 2week review.
